The 4th of July… with thanks to our founding fathers and Kaiser William I

As we prepare for another glorious Fourth of July holiday here in the Islands, it might be worthwhile to thank not only our founding fathers, but also the German Kaiser who in 1872 made it possible for us in the San Juan Islands to celebrate the holiday with the rest of the country.

Prior to 1872, The San Juan Islands were disputed territory between Canada and the United States. The Kaiser was chosen as the arbitrator to resolve the dispute and on the 21st of October 1872 the decision was made that the San Juans were to be American territory. It is because of this decisionthat  we celebrate the 4th of July rather than Victoria Day (which this year was held on the 23rd of May) or Canada Day celebrated on 1 July.

Speaking of celebrating, there’s lots to do on Orcas this 4th of July. Click here to get the latest information on what’s happening this weekend.

See you around the Island and have a safe holiday!

But… is there enough to do?

Living on an Island is nice, but is there enough to do?

This has been a really busy week for us Islanders, on Orcas this weekend is the annual Artist Studio tour. This tour offers the opportunity to visit 32 studios and a chance to meet the artists. Visit their link at http://www.orcasartistsstudiotour.com .

Then the 17th Annual Chamber Music festival continues to amaze and will run through August 23rd Visit their site at http://www.oicmf.org . See below for a video highlight from a couple of years ago.

Then… where else can you experience “Farm-Tastic-Fun” other than at the San Juan County Fair? Annually, The Fair offers the community five days of fun, the chance to get together and enjoy old time favorites such as 4-H shows, carnival rides, the horse barn, the Textile Guild barn, plus you can participate in newer features such as the Rabbit races and the Zucchini 500. New this year is the Wenatchee Youth Circus. – Life is good in the Islands… be a part of it!

The Orcas Library Book Sale… a book lovers dream!

9 August 2014: One of the highlights that we look forward to in the summer is the Orcas Library book sale. Literally, there are thousands of books available, some of which used to be mine. Islanders pick up their winter’s reading material and then we return our surplus books for next year’s sale. More proof that Orcas Islanders pride themselves in their sustainability! This year my haul included some Asian cookbooks, travel books about France and a very cool souvenir book printed in 1937 about the coronation of George VI and Westminster Abbey. Happy reading! Tm

PS. The Orcas Library has one of the highest book loan to population rates in Washington State!
